Madusu Jawara

Madusu Jawara

Hello,

My name is Madusu Jawara and it is with great pleasure that I find myself a member of the EIMAS community. As an aspiring public servant with the aim of drafting, implementing and monitoring sustainable development and environmental policies in sub-Saharan Africa, I believe I have a professional and ethical obligation to bring my best to the table by developing to the fullest capacity, my awareness of the geo-political, socio-economic, and technological changes happening on the continent.

I always say that my love and interest for Africa has first and foremost always been familial. I was born and raised in Banjul, The Gambia and I am also a Sierra Leonean by birth. Most recently however, I have been a resident of Minneapolis, MN in the United States.

I have a BA from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities where I double majored in Global Studies with a regional concentration in Africa and a thematic concentration in Environment and Sustainable Development; and African American and African Studies.

My work experiences include interning with the Kenya National Environment Management Authority in Kilifi, Kenya. This privileged opportunity allowed me to work with a resident population that was as diverse in its ethnicity and economic background as it was in its ecological needs. It is consequently what led to my passion for field work and community education.

I have since gone on to serve as a municipal Environmental Health Intern, an Environmental Law and Compliance Officer, as well as a Code Enforcement Inspector for both state and local regulatory agencies. In addition to this, I remain steadfast in volunteering and community organizing efforts to provide support for the growing African migrant community in Minnesota.

I am particularly happy to be a part of the EIMAS programme because of the interdisciplinary approach which aims to affirm Africa and Africans as global players with autonomy and agency in an everchanging world.

Cheers!
