Wasilat Adepeju Azeez

Wasilat Azeez

Hi there!

I am Wasilat, and I’m absolutely thrilled to embark on this new journey of learning, unlearning, and relearning. My name, Wasilat, is of Arabic origin, and it means “one who seeks nearness to God”.

I was born and raised in Lagos, a cosmopolitan and boisterous city in southwestern Nigeria. Lagos, with its vibrant energy and diverse cultures, has shaped me into the curious, fun-loving and resilient individual I am today.

I studied Mass Communication at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria, and proudly emerged with a first-class degree. And let me tell you, life’s curveballs and moments of self-doubt didn’t stand a chance against my drive to succeed.

Since I graduated, I’ve worked as a journalist. From capturing the intricacies of business and finance to the meticulous art of fact-checking, my journalistic interests have taken me on quite the adventure. But what truly lights up my world is contributing to the development of women – uplifting, empowering, and celebrating their accomplishments. My work has also given me the incredible opportunity to amplify marginalised voices.

In the course of my career, I grew to realise that Africa’s narrative was often portrayed with misconceptions and half-truths. I found myself yearning to alter the narratives that have long defined the continent. To do that, I knew I needed to expand my horizons to truly understand the complexities of my beloved Africa.

I was drawn to the EIMAS programme because of its interdisciplinary approach which spans across fields such as anthropology, political science, religious studies, and more, thereby providing a multidimensional lens through which to analyse Africa’s history and its relationships with the rest of the world.

As I step into the academic realm armed with the insights of journalism, I’m ready to unravel layers, challenge stereotypes, correct misconceptions and contribute to a more holistic understanding of Africa. My aspiration is to channel my learnings into the development sector, where I can contribute to initiatives that empower people, create sustainable change, and uplift communities.
