Who We Are

Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, is an internationally recognised multidisciplinary organisation, working mainly in partnership with countries in the Mediterranean and intertropical zone. IRD takes an original approach to research, expertise, training and knowledge-sharing for the benefit of countries and regions, making science and innovation key drivers in their development. Its geographic intervention area priority is Sub Saharan Africa, and for that, IRD is present in West, Central, East and Southern Africa. IRD in Côte d’Ivoire is one of the partners of EIMAS, and a link to others countries where IRD is present could also be done, depending of the field of expertise.

What We Do

IRD sets its priorities in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in September 2015, to steer development policies. Combining critical analysis into the implementation of these goals, IRD seeks to tackle the challenges facing us today: global, environmental, economic, social and cultural changes that affect the whole planet. In Côte d’Ivoire for example, we are working on differents topics as health, societies, climate, mining and environment, agroecology, hydrology and biodiversity. Our researchers belong from numerous scientific disciplines (geographer, demographer, sociologist, political scientist, biologist, entomologist, climatologist, hydrologist, soil scientist).

One of our projects: Tsetse flies control in Côte d’Ivoire. A tiny target (blue and black peace of cloth impregnated with insecticide) deployed against tsetse flies, vectors of Human African Trypanosomiasis and Animal African Trypanosomosis, in the focus of Bonon.
