Laura Mahler

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in European Studies from the University of Passau and the joint EIMAS Master’s degree from the Universities of Porto, Bayreuth, and Bordeaux Montaigne. In my Master’s thesis „The Continuing Presence of Trauma. Namibian Artists Dealing with the Genocide of Ovaherero and Nama“, I examined the German colonial past in Namibia. The thesis focused on different forms of trauma that drive Namibian artists to address the genocide in their artistic work.
In my current position as Advisor for Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect with a focus on Sub-Saharan Africa at the internationally operating human rights organization Society for Threatened Peoples, I continue to address the lasting consequences of colonialism. My work is centered on close cooperation with communities on the ground, while holding German politics and companies accountable for their role and responsibilities.
